the nakasendo, or "central mountain route", was a historic edo-period road, taken on foot, that connected 69 post towns on a 540-kilometer route between tokyo and kyoto. a 7.3-kilometer stretch still exists between the towns of tsumago-juku and magome-juku in nagano prefecture, where the photos were taken.
